Why You Should Use Organic Cosmetics

By VIBRANT BEAUTY

In case you haven’t heard…synthetic chemicals are present in most every aspect of our modern lives. There are parts of what we eat, drink and breathe that are unnatural and due to the industrial practices of today. Our bodies can filter out most foreign junk, however as various pollutant levels continue to rise without serious mitigation there is increasing evidence and mainstream acceptance that our food, air and products can be harmful to our health.

Cosmetics of course are obviously made of numerous kinds of chemicals, some begin, others toxic. Since the 1950s there has been a strong trend in using petroleum byproducts and other industry leftovers in beauty recipes. These chemicals include pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and fertilizers. Today’s leading top seller beauty brands still incorporate these toxic ingredients in very low amounts into their products. Many of the perpetrating chemicals provide no true benefit to the skin or body but instead increase the attractiveness of the product itself, such as adding to the color, texture or fragrance of the cream, makeup or soap. This wouldn’t be too much of a problem if our cosmetics and other skin care products were just topical. The truth is that that our skin absorbs 90% of what is put on it, so effectively we are ‘eating’ what we put on.

Organic and organic, simple cosmetics are nothing new. Instead the market has shifted due to concerns about the health hazards of chemicals in the body organic cosmetics are introduced. New companies are becoming more sophisticated in their branding and packaging strategies to appeal to a youthful, environmentally conscious generation. Old mainstays of the industry are quick to jump on the ‘natural’ goodwill trend as well. Yet it remains to be seen whether gigantic companies with high resource needs can truly meet the standards of truly ‘organic’ and pure ingredients. The smaller farms and manufacturers, tend to better manage environmental practices simply by not mono-cropping their produce or deleting soil nutrition.

The use of organic cosmetics will not just be beneficial to the skin but also to the environment. Organic ingredients are less likely to cause skin irritations and allergic reactions unlike most chemicals.

When buying organic cosmetics, it is not enough to just read the names and believe in the advertisements. It is very important to read the ingredients if it really contains organic ingredients or have harsh chemicals in them. The process that the ingredients go through is also important in making it truly organic. The labels and pamphlets of most products carry much information about them. It is better to take the time to read them rather than watch enticing advertisements. Organic cosmetic products are made from organic materials that do not use potential hazardous chemicals. Interestingly, the label “organic” has been defined by the USDA and its definition means less than purely organic materials. Meaning, just because a label states “organic” does not mean that the truly are organic. This makes finding a pure cosmetic even more difficult to find.

When dealing with our bodies and especially the skin which are prone to getting irritated and can have allergic reactions, it is best to care for them naturally.  Cosmetics may make our outward appearances look grand but eventually damage it in the long run. It can presently make your skin glow and look young but in the end cause ailments that can make you look even older than you really are.

No More Dirty Looks

A Book Every Girl Should Own
Every girl likes to look her best. That is why she should read No More Dirty Looks: The Truth About Your Beauty Products, and the Ultimate Guide to Safe and Clean Cosmetics. Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt have delivered an easy-to-read, understandable source that answers the questions. It’s a treasure trove of useful information, suggested brands for hair, face, make-up, body, and nails, and even some DIY alternatives.

The book is eye-opening, interesting, informative, and yes, funny, too. It begins with the background information on how the beauty industry works in the U.S., and how it – well, doesn’t. For those who don’t care to know the history or details of it all, there is a short summary, and then you can jump to the next section, which details the top 20 scary ingredients that you want to avoid in health and beauty products.

Once the foundation is laid, O’Connor and Spunt then dive into each category one at a time: hair, face, make-up, body, and nails. They detail the concerns in each, describing the most typical offenders that you’ll find in mainstream products, and offering suggested clean and non-toxic brands, as well as home recipes and other alternatives, such as aloe vera for your curly hair gel. (note to self: buy some aloe vera)

I carry it in my bag every time I go for shopping :)
