The ascent of ferment

By Merritt Watts for Q.Equinox.com

When canning made a comeback, foodies were salivating at the abundance of artisanal jams and pickles so ubiquitous that they were worthy of a “Portlandia” sketch. Little did they know, the trend would also help rediscover one of the healthiest foods around — fermented vegetables.

Sauerkraut and kimchi (a traditional Korean mixture of fermented cabbage and radishes), may not sound like the stuff of health-food legend, but they’re some of the best sources of probiotics and nutrients, especially when made with the traditional methods that are gaining ground with today’s artisanal food makers.

Thanks to smart marketing, yogurt is the food that’s synonymous with probiotics (the healthy bacteria that has been shown to help boost immunity and address digestive issues), but that doesn’t mean it has a monopoly on the beneficial-bacteria market. Fermented vegetables contain the same cultures, and are perfect options for the dairy-averse, vegans, or people who just want an extra dose of probiotics without the extra sugar that often comes with yogurt. (A cup of ‘kraut has 27 calories and 2.5 grams of sugar. Compare that to the same amount of plain, low-fat yogurt, which contains 154 calories and 17 grams of sugar.)

5 ways to feng shui your life

By Mandy Oaklander for Prevention.com

If you’re an office minimalist—sporting the standard-issue desk, computer, and chair—your 9-5 home can look pretty depressing.

Mine certainly did. That’s why I asked feng shui consultant Ann Bingley Gallops, the founder of Open Spaces Feng Shui in Brooklyn, for help.

Feng shui is more than the world’s most mispronounced tradition. (For the record, it’s “fung shway,” which means wind and water: Two energies you need for life and good health, Gallops explains.) The practice originated with Chinese farmers, who used it to find the most prosperous place to put their crops. At its most basic, feng shui consists of arranging objects and furniture in such a way that makes energy flow with you and generates positive chi, or life force.

Gallops turned to feng shui after a divorce and her career as a marketing executive left her feeling dissatisfied. She says it’s no coincidence that once she began practicing, she found a great new apartment with a garden, new opportunities in work, and the man of her dreams.

Who wouldn’t want some of that? (I definitely did—check out the feng shui magic she worked on my office!) Here, Gallops shares her four best feng shui basics for your home or office:

1. No, really. Clear your clutter. You didn’t think you could feng shui without throwing things away, did you? “There’s no hiding from feng shui eyes,” Gallops says. Clearing clutter is the first step to creating better energy. “You get such a sense of freedom, and you create space so that new opportunities can come into your life,” she says.

Healthy Benefits of Green Tea on the Skin

By VIBRANT BEAUTY

For ages, tea has been a favorite drink all over the world. It is not just an ordinary well-known beverage but it is famous for its health benefits as well. Different kinds of tea can actually prevent and ease symptoms of many diseases like cancer and heart disease. Some varieties even claim to help in losing weight.  Another popular benefit of tea is how it helps in digesting food and eliminating toxins. A type of tea that is gaining popularity these days because of its health benefits is green tea. The component of green tea called polyphenols and its subtype catechins is the substance that has medicinal properties. Green tea is known to lower bad cholesterol and lowers the risk of certain cancers. It also has anti-bacterial qualities that can prevent tooth decay and protect the body against food poisoning. There are also studies conducted that show great benefits of green tea on the skin.

Your skin is a major organ that can take advantage of the health benefits of green tea. The most powerful positive benefit of green tea to the skin can be attributed to it being a powerful antioxidant. It is known to fight free radicals that may damage the skin and cause premature aging. Although, green tea is not known to protect the skin from UV rays but it does lessen the damaging effects of free radicals caused by sun exposure. It is also known to reduce inflammations that are caused by several damaging factors.
Green tea nowadays is used in many beauty products especially for anti-aging. They are used as ingredients in creams that are said to increase the skin’s quality by increasing its elasticity. This will then counteract the aging process and make the skin suppler.
Green tea has anti-inflammatory qualities that are useful in treating acne. Research shows that it is as effective in treating acne as Benzoyl Peroxide but is actually less irritating and has lesser side effects. It can lighten skin color therefore reducing the appearance of blemishes.
Many skin care and beauty products are available that contains green tea in its ingredients. But there are some ways that green tea remedies can be made at home. One of the easiest way is perhaps freezing freshly brewed green tea then thawing it for only a while to avoid freeze burn then applying it directly on the skin. It will act like a toner. Drinking green tea regularly can also be beneficial since it is always best to keep a healthy skin from within.
Perhaps the best advantage of green tea as compared to other beauty products is that it is a product of nature. It not a chemical that might have some side effects that may not appear instantly but will have long term damaging effects. The benefits of green tea on the skin is all natural therefore trying it out is less risky than trying out new products that can cause allergic effects and may cause more damage in the long run than the benefits it claims. Go ahead and try green tea for the skin and see how you can greatly you can benefit from it.

How to Get Your Multivitamin Naturally

By VIBRANT BEAUTY

The only way to get your multivitamin naturally is to eat them. Vitamin pills and tablets may seem the easiest way to benefit from vitamins, but they are obviously not the most natural way. In truth, only food can provide large quantities of nutrients and fiber—which pills obviously lack.

So what are these vitamins and how do you get them from your daily diet? Here is a helpful guide to help you choose the right kind of food with the right kind of multivitamins:

  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant proven to fight damaging free radicals. This vitamin has been shown to sustain a healthy immune system and boost the “good cholesterol,” HDL. The best food sources of Vitamin C include citrus fruits and juices, red and green peppers, brussel sprouts, strawberries, broccoli, kale, collard greens and spinach. Remember to eat your recommended five servings daily of Vitamin C-rich fruits and vegetables!
  • Calcium, which is vital for bone health, can be obtained from dairy products, legumes, dark green leafy vegetables, and calcium-fortified soy milk or orange juice. Women up to the age of 50 should get at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium every day, while those over 50 should get at least 1,200.
  • Vitamin B6 and B12 are the “B complex of vitamins” that keep the blood, nerves and the immune system performing properly. Vitamin B6 is abundant in beans, bananas, whole grains, fish, chicken, nuts and wheat germ. B12 is plentiful in dairy, fish, eggs, beef, poultry and pork.
  • Vitamin E is an antioxidant that protects the eyes and prevents Alzheimer’s disease. It can be found in avocados, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, almonds, nuts, and vegetable oil such as safflower, sunflower, olive, canola, and cottonseed.
  • Iron inhibits iron-deficiency anemia and supports a healthy immune system. Iron is most abundant in and best absorbed from red meat, clams, egg yolks, fish, chicken, legumes, cereals, and fortified grains. Take 18 milligrams of iron per day, but remember to avoid supplementing iron beyond the amount found in most multivitamins because excess levels may damage body organs.
  • Vitamin D enhances calcium absorption and can be found in fortified foods like milk and cereal, and fatty fishes like tuna and salmon.
  • Vitamin K helps maintain healthy blood clotting and supports bone density and strength. Best food sources of Vitamin K are dark green and leafy vegetables and vegetable oils such as soybean, canola and olive.

The best way to get your multivitamin naturally is through your plate, so always remember to eat up on healthy foods!

CoQ10 Side Effects: The Bare Facts

By VIBRANT BEAUTY

You may have heard about CoQ10 and the claims that it can improve energy levels. CoQ10 actually stands for Coenzyme Q10 which is a compound naturally found within the cells of the body. Other names for CoQ10, are Q10, vitamin Q10, ubidecarenone and ubiquinone. CoQ10 functions similarly to that of an antioxidant, which prevents free radicals from further damaging the body.

CoQ10 can be found in small amounts many different types of foods, however the coenzyme is present with the highest amounts in meats such as kidneys, livers and hearts. Followed by beef, sardines, and mackerel. Vegetarians can turn to peanuts and soy oil.

CoQ10 has been claimed to aid in health conditions such as heart failure, muscular dystrophy, cancer, and periodontal disease. Energy boost and quicker recovery times after working out have likewise been attributed to the coenzyme. Despite these positive claims, medical researchers have likewise been warning about CoQ10 side effects. These include:

  • Increased levels of liver enzymes in people taking doses of 300 mg per day for extended periods of time.

  • Mild insomnia in some patients who take 100 mg of CoQ10 daily or more.

  • Rashes, nausea, upper abdominal pain, sensitivity to light, dizziness, heartburn, heartache, fatigue and irritability.

  • Reduced body response to anticoagulant (blood thinning) medicine warfarin and decreased insulin requirements in people with diabetes.

  • Increased risks to pregnant and breastfeeding women who should not rely on dietary supplements.

  • Undetermined long-term effects.

  • Incompatibility with high cholesterol and low blood sugar medicines, which can decrease CoQ10 levels and reduce the effects of the coenzyme supplements.

It is important to note that like traditional and conventional medicines, dietary supplements such as CoQ10 may cause side effects, set off allergic reactions, or interact and clash with other medicines (prescription or nonprescription) you may also be taking. The coenzyme’s interaction with another medicine or supplement may even produce much worse CoQ10 side effects. So it would be best to be wary of whatever you decide to take to improve your health.

5 fitness facts that studies say probably aren’t true

By Well+GoodNYC

The First 20 Minutes, New York Times “Phys Ed” columnist Gretchen Reynold’s new book, is like a Myth Busters episode devoted to exercise science.

And we predict that it changes the way more people move than 50 Shades of Grey.

In it, Reynolds uses recent, quality research to address oft-debated exercise questions and to strike down common misconceptions—like how much should we exercise (20 minutes at a time, hence the book name, is enough to reap health benefits.) What’s the best way to get rid of muscle cramps? (Drinking pickle juice. Yes, really.) And many, many more.

The book is so full of fitness findings that floored us that we selected five of the most jarring research conclusions Reynolds comes to.

Warning: These big five may change the way you think about your exercise regimen and, just as urgently, your beach reading. Find out what they are now…

By Lisa Elaine Held

1. You don’t have to stay ahead of your thirst. Hydration is important, but researchers in the book call the age-old eight-glasses-a-day recommendation “nonsense.” Recent studies cited have shown that thirst is “actually a reliable physiological marker of your fluid needs. If you’re thirsty, drink. If you’re not, you probably are sufficiently hydrated.”

2. Post-exercise massages don’t get rid of lactic acid. Athletes generally get post-match massages in order to break up the build-up of lactic acid, which is thought to cause muscle soreness. But research studies found that it’s not effective for this purpose and can in fact impair the removal of lactic acid from exercised muscle. (We await a spa industry rebuttal.)

Detrimental Effects of Foods High in Sodium by Vibrant Beauty Staff

By VIBRANT BEAUTY

Sodium is common in our daily dietary intake as sodium chloride or common salt. It is widely used everywhere to add flavor to any dish. It is also used as a food preservative. Sodium in the right amount is needed by the body. It is needed in the normal regulation of bodily fluids. It is an important electrolyte that is needed for the production of electrical signals to the brain and nervous system. But because people are quite accustomed to using salt as a seasoning for their food, many people consume more sodium than they are allowed. Although excess sodium will be excreted in the urine, there are times when a person takes in way too much sodium that the kidneys can no longer eliminate the sodium as fast as the intake. There are many detrimental effects of foods high in sodium on our health including kidney and heart diseases.

Processed foods are high in sodium.  Recommended daily allowance of sodium should not be more than 2400 mg per day but studies show that on the average, men and women these days can consume between 4000 mg to 5000 mg per day. This is due to the increasing consumption of junk foods, fast foods and processed foods. An ounce of potato chips (about 15 chips) contains approximately about 180 mg of sodium already. So imagine how much sodium a bag of chips contain. The sodium content of a burger can go as high as 1000 mg which is almost half of the daily intake already. That is why some companies have come up with low sodium varieties to at least lessen the sodium intake of individuals.

High sodium diets can directly affect hypertensive individuals. Sodium in excess can increase blood pressure therefore increasing the risk of heart problems and stroke. Sodium is also known to cause water retention. Too much water retained can cause the heart to work harder therefore putting much strain on the heart.

The kidneys are the body organs that are responsible for the excretion of excess water in the body. The increase in intake of sodium lessens the capability of kidneys to take away water. Too much fluid will also result to high blood pressure and will result in too much tension on the blood vessels to the kidneys. This will ultimately lead to kidneys disease. Toxic waste product will now start to build up because the kidneys do not function well anymore.

It is a known fact that everything in excess is harmful. So take everything in moderation especially foods high in sodium. It is better to watch your diet than face the unhealthy effects of not being able to balance your diet.

When you eat food high in sodium, the sodium levels in your blood also are raised. This is problematic because it stresses the body and hinders the kidneys ability to work.

Over time, this extra strain can damage the kidneys – known as kidney disease. This reduces their ability to filter out unwanted and toxic waste products, which then start to build up in the body.

Boost Your Health With Natural Energy Foods

By VIBRANT BEAUTY

Taking natural health supplements is not a precise science where one list of nutrient intake is perfect for all people. Every person is different and responds differently to environmental factors, the foods they consume, stress at home and work, and the many other day to day activities we each take part in. There is no book, doctor, or magician that can give you the perfect concoction for you to remain eternally young and energetic,.What is possible though is to take the numerous years of experience in natural health supplement studies and use those findings to boost energy levels by using natural energy foods.

When seeking to fill your diet with natural energy foods, it’s best to look for foods that are also high in antioxidants. A “calorie” is just a measurement of energy. Energy can be gathered from any food, even if it’s a fast food meal with a deep fried triple cheeseburger, super large french fries, a mini apple pie, served with a small diet coke. The objective in obtaining energy though should be to take in those foods which are best for our bodies and in doing so we must look at some of nature’s most abundant naturally grown meals.

Foods high in antioxidants are by far the most beneficial natural energy foods available. There are many antioxidant foods. New research has found that even many whole grain products contain antioxidants, but the most well known are typically anti-aging foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and even coffee.

One of the best known antioxidant fruits and natural energy foods is the avocado. Avocados are high in fat but not saturated fat, like that of animals. The monosaturated fats they contain actually help our bodies reduce cholesterol levels. Avocados are also seen in many cosmetic products designed to help people obtain a more youthful appearance because they’re very high in vitamin E which helps in many ways from the building of collagen to the repair of skin tissue. Avocados are also considered a great anti-aging food because they contain potassium. Potassium is a mineral that is excellent for managing high blood pressure.

Another one of the antioxidant fruits and natural energy foods are berries. With the exception of certain coffee beans, berries as a food group have more antioxidants in foods than any other food source. One berry to focus on that makes for a great anti-aging food is the acai berry. Most of us believe that by keeping our weight down, we can add years to our lives; and the acai berry has received a very good reputation for being an antioxidant fruit that certainly stimulate weight loss because it works inside of us by speeding up our metabolism. That means our body processes digestive functions quicker and even heals faster. When you put all this together, it equates to shedding pounds. When looking for snacks or great additions to meals, look for salads and natural energy foods. You certainly won’t regret the outcome.

Try A Lemon Detox Cleanse with Natural Ingredients

By VIBRANT BEAUTY

A detox, or detoxification, is not for everyone. The process involves a strong commitment to the foods you are abstaining from. The overall purpose of a detox is to rid your body of any impurities, though some use it to shed a few pounds.

In many religious cultures, a detox is part of their “fasting.” Fasting is abstaining from those things that may distract you from a closer relationship with God. In many fasts, the church congregation is asked to give up certain foods or food altogether.

To create this lemon detox cleanse from home, you need one lemon, cold water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. With eight ounces of cold water, mix two tablespoons of lemon juice, two tablespoons of maple syrup and 1/10th of a teaspoon for cayenne pepper. It is recommended you drink this concoction six to eight times a day for no more than two weeks.

Many celebrities utilize this lemon detox as a way of losing weight fast. After consuming nothing but this detox for two weeks, you can lose 12 to 20 pounds. In addition to weight loss, this detox may make your hair shinier and your skin clearer. The vitamins and minerals in the detox also assist the digestive system which leads to a reduction in the risk of heart disease, and stomach and oral cancer.

In order for this detox to have the full effect, no solid foods must be consumed. The lack of food will be a bitter pill for some so if you choose to go through with it, start slow. And check with your physician to see if this kind of detox is best for your body and its individual needs.

Though some believe the ingredients in this cleanse will increase your energy, others say it will make you tired and lethargic due to the lack of calories you consume each day. Without the cleanse, doctors suggest we consume about 2,000 calories a day. With the cleanse, we are only consuming about 600 calories a day, in 10 glasses of the lemon detox. So, while we lose weight, we also lose some of our muscle.

Other side effects can include dehydration, headache, and irritability. Taking part in this cleanse may have similar results on the body that starvation does. If you go on this detox for more than two weeks, it may result in you being less focused.

The Breast Cancer Causer in Your Cabinet

By Leah Zerbe for RODALE.com

A food-packaging chemical found in most homes is likely causing breast cancer, a new study shows.

The canned-food chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, has been under attack for years, with study after study suggesting it’s associated with negative health impacts ranging from cancer and obesity to infertility and heart disease.

BPA is a common hormone-disrupting chemical used as a liner in metal food and drink cans and in cash-register receipts.

One of the chemical industry’s favorite ways to deflect this criticism is to discredit many of the studies because they looked at BPA’s health impacts on rodents, not species more closely related to humans. But a new study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is strengthening the push to ban BPA, showing that levels of the chemical used in many of those rodent studies—levels commonly found in most Americans—is also increasing breast cancer risk in monkeys, a close relative of humans.

“The sum of all these findings strongly suggests that BPA is a breast carcinogen in humans, and human exposure to BPA should be curtailed,” says study coauthor Ana M. Soto, MD, professor of anatomy and cell biology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

In the latest study, researchers fed pregnant monkeys bits of fruit containing BPA daily during their third trimester of pregnancy. They found that a pregnant monkeys’ low-level exposure caused abnormal changes in the offspring’s breast tissue. Specifically, the offspring’s mammary glands were denser, one of the leading risk factors in breast cancer.

BPA is chemically related to diethylstilbestrol, an estrogen that increases the risk of breast cancer in both rodents and in women exposed in the womb. “BPA is an estrogen, and estrogens are considered carcinogens,” Dr. Soto explains.

Much of the research on BPA and breast cancer risk involves fetal exposure and cancer that develops decades later. However, a study published in the journal Circulation in February showed a direct link between high BPA exposure in healthy adults and a greater risk of developing heart disease in the future. Different research appearing in PLoS ONE earlier this year discovered that BPA overrode the female body’s natural heartbeat signaling and caused arrhythmia (erratic beating that could cause sudden cardiac death) in heart tissue testing.

The message? No matter what your age, and regardless of your desire to become pregnant, it’s in everyone’s best interest to reduce BPA exposure.

The Food and Drug Administration was sued and forced to consider a BPA ban in food packaging, but said earlier this year it needed more time to determine whether the chemical threatens human health.

Still, a select few companies say they are planning to move away from use of BPA in canned goods, including Campbell’s Soup. Some canned food companies, like Eden Foods, have already removed BPA from cans and named the replacement. Campbell’s, however, isn’t naming the replacement chemical or saying when the BPA ban will go into effect. Also of concern? Some researchers fear BPA replacement chemicals could be just as bad—or worse—than BPA.

Avoiding canned food and drinks is a great way to reduce BPA exposure, but because the chemical is produced in heavy volumes and used in so many products, many public health experts believe government needs to intervene to cut back on this toxic exposure.

“Even if we try to decrease our exposure to BPA by reducing the use of plastics and canned food, and avoiding to touch credit card receipts, there’s now way of knowing if we’ve reduced exposure by 5 percent or 95 percent; thus, what we need is regulatory action to decrease human exposure to BPA,” says Dr. Soto.
